Passion for God, Compassion for People

The more I use words like “love," I am forced to consider the reality that its definition is as subjective as it is confusing. The English language is kind of awkward with some of its words, and “love" is one of them. It has several definitions, any of which can apply.

“I love you."

“I love you, too."

“No, I love you like a brother."

“Well, I love you like a mom."

“I love you like a slice of pizza."

“I love you like a puppy."

“I love you like I love a good movie."

“I LOVE you love you."

“Huh?"

“I'm in love with you."

“But I love tennis."

“Oh, never mind."

“Love" and its many meanings always seem to make sense to us except where our faith applies.

Town Mountain Comes to To...

When David Grisman brought his Quintet to the Granby Theater last November, folks who came to hear Grismans "dawg music" blend of bluegrass and jazz were pleasantly surprised by the energy, enthusiasm and spirited good timeliness of the opening act, Town Mountain, from Asheville, N. C. It turns out Town Mountain has a connection to this arealead singer and guitarist Robert Greer is the son of William T. Greer, Jr., the popular president of Virginia Wesleyan College.

So the obvious question is: How does the son of a college president turn out to be a bluegrass musician?

"Thats a good question," Robert Greer replied when I asked recently. "Ive been singing my whole life. Nobody really plays instruments in my family though my dad plays a little piano. I got sick of asking people to accompany me while I was singing, so I figured I better learn how to play the guitar.

Waukee woman helps others speak clearly

Dawn Philbin has returned home to Iowa from travels abroad, ready and willing to put her skills to work helping others with speech, language, reading and spelling difficulties.

Philbin, whose husband works for the U.S. State Department, moved back in December 2005 to establish a permanent home. After one year of working for other people and getting ready to establish her career here, she said she is ready to ramp up her client base.

Philbin, a speech/language pathologist, works with children and adults. Her specialty is working with individuals and small groups with language learning disabilities. She also works with adults on accent reduction and modification, and she does speech and language therapy for adults and children with lisps and other language problems.

Ensembles for the soul

EVE and Don Cohen spent last week gearing up for the 20th annual all-day party at their Cheviot Hills home. The preparations meant scheduling more than 80 amateur chamber musicians to play in five rooms Saturday — changing partners every 45 minutes plus grazing on a potluck dinner, sampling wines and watching a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta unfold in the backyard, complete with live orchestra.

"We thought Hindemith — instead of Brahms or Beethoven — would drive them away, but when we scheduled him as the composer a few years back, even more came," says Eve Cohen, who tried composers Bohuslav Martinu and Grazyna Bacewicz this year but cooked for 100 guests nonetheless.

300 vs. Iran (and Herodotus)

I always take in the Hollywood period dramas set in ancient Greece or Rome. My film-buff son is into this too, so we went last week to see 300, the Warner Brothers' blockbuster produced by Zack Snyder and based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller about the epic battle of Thermopylae between the Greeks and Persians. It had by that time grossed over 100 million dollars and no doubt influenced a lot of minds. The film tells a familiar historical tale. (Rather, it ought to be familiar, but history instruction in our public schools is not necessarily comprehensive.) In 480 BCE, Greece was threatened by an invasion by the Persian army, the greatest war machine of its day. The empire of King Xerxes extended from the Indus River to Egypt, and drew its troops from the ends of the realm. The king personally led them in battle against the Greeks.
