Editorial: Tragedy of campus shootings is that signs were there to see
Among the myriad distasteful soundbites that have emerged from Blacksburg, Virginia, since the catastrophic university shootings was that uttered by President Bush at the memorial service the day after a crazed gunman killed 33 people before shooting himself. "Laura and I have come to Blacksburg today with hearts full of sorrow," he intoned. "This is a day of ... sadness for our entire nation." The next day, car bombs and suicide bombers killed nearly 200 people in Baghdad - six for every life that was extinguished in Virginia. Some 140 died in a single explosion, the worst insurgent bomb attack since the US-led invasion more than four years ago promised to deliver peace and security to a country now riven with bloody sectarian strife. The irony of that grisly coincidence would doubtless be lost on Bush.
Language school seeks uniformity
The University of Cincinnati's language instructors have come together under a single organizational umbrella, creating a new school known as "The School of World Languages and Cultures." The organizational change occurred so language instructors and faculty would have a systematic means of communicating with each other, according to Lowanne Jones, director and department head of Romance Languages. Standardization problems that occurred regarding the way classes were named are now simplified and have been made more uniform in the One Stop class offerings to help advisors and students navigate the process of choosing the right classes. The faculty also is working on ways of improving the education and expanding the breadth of classes offered to students.
Software can't cushion a mother's pain when words fail
Doris Moore was shocked when her new couch was delivered to her Toronto home bearing a label that described the dark brown shade of the upholstery as "nigger brown". Ms Moore is black, and it was her seven-year-old daughter who noticed the label. "My daughter saw the label and she knew the colour brown but didn't know what the other word meant," Ms Moore said. "She asked: 'Mummy, what colour is that?' I was stunned. I didn't know what to say. I never thought that's how she'd learn of that word." Ms Moore complained to the furniture store, which blamed the supplier, which blamed a computer problem. A Chinese software company, Kingsoft Corp, admitted its translation program was at fault and said it was a regrettable error. "I know this is a very bad word," said Huang Luoyi, a product manager at the Beijing company.
'Frustrated' Hinrich must learn to stay in control
Growth and confidence and, most of all, maturity were supposed to come together for the Bulls this season. They were supposed to be older now, and catching a Heat team merely old. The box score of the Bulls' 96-91 win Saturday over Miami in Game 1 of their playoff series might even suggest as much -- except when reading Kirk Hinrich's line. The Bulls' alleged floor leader, the first of their core group of youngsters to be rewarded with a long-term deal, managed exactly two points, three assists, four turnovers and five fouls. .
